subject indigenous studies Canada Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. -Chief Seattle Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality. -Martin Luther King, Jr. INDG 200 critically examines contemporary issues that Indigenous peoples confront on an international level. It is important to emphasize that these issues are not simply issues—but lived realities. Whether we are discussing poor housing, lack of water, child removal, or environmental exploitation of Indigenous lands, these issues are personal and lived: they affect you and your peers on multiple fronts. We need to shift our perspective, moreover, to realize that the issues we confront in INDG 200 are not only Indigenous realities, but, rather, conditions that have far-reaching implications that affect everyone, albeit differently, from Euro-Canadian settlers to new Canadians, and beyond. For this assignment, I am asking you to consider Martin Luther King Jr.’s and Chief Seattle’s statements. • Conduct research on a contemporary reality (local, national, or international) that Indigenous peoples confront. As part of this section, examine the historical roots of this issue (ie. removal of Indigenous children in present-day Canada serves as a continuation of residential schooling). (Note: Individuals struggle daily with systemic inequalities, along with racist divisions, resulting from colonial histories. It can be argued, therefore, that colonialism is not a historical construct, but a tangible force that is very much part of the present.) • Identify how Indigenous peoples are fighting back to change this lived reality; and, • Critically locate yourself within the context of this issue and explore how it affects you.
