What is the source of the story? For example: a. Who is the author and what is the author’s expertise (e.g., scientist, policy maker, industry representative, journalist, etc.)? b. What is the organization with which the writer is affiliated (industry, university, government, or other)? c. If the author is a scientist, what is his or her expertise with the subject area (e.g., what type of science)? 2. How does the story (and the author’s argument) fit with what you have learned about the science of climate change? 3. How does the author/skeptic deal with uncertainty? _____________________________________________________________________ Module 2 Discussion Topic: Climate Change and the Arctic Extensive hydrocarbon deposits have already been discovered in the Arctic, and estimates for undiscovered petroleum resources are immense, especially for the offshore region. Oil and gas development in the Arctic is not new, with production in parts of Russia and Alaska starting in the 1960s. To date, most Arctic activity has been onshore, but current exploration is focused on the potential for large-scale development. It is somewhat ironic that fossil fuel emissions, which have already impacted the vulnerable Arctic region in terms of climate change, may also ultimately allow for easier access for offshore oil exploration and production in due to a reduction in sea ice and expansion of shipping opportunities. Given what you have learned about the impacts of climate change on the Arctic, what is your view of large-scale oil and gas development in the region? Do you support it? What are the main reasons that convince you to take this position? To address this question effectively, you should first browse the Council on Foreign Relation’s “The Emerging Arctic” website to get a better understanding of some of the issues in the region. You will also need to do a brief online search to deepen your understanding of the issues involved. A few resource suggestions are included in the box below. You may find it helpful to focus on a particular area in your response. Examples of areas you may want to consider include the Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, the Mackenzie Valley pipeline, or offshore oil and gas development in the Beaufort Sea or in Russia. It also contains some information, although minimal, on natural resource development, including oil and gas, for the various sub-regions. _____________________________________________________________________ Module 3 Discussion Topic: Fossil Fuel Divestment in Post-Secondary Institutions in British Columbia It is evident that the climate has already changed and British Columbia is not immune to the impacts of global climate change. While adaptation measures are important and continued action is needed in this area, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) is critical if we want to limit the rate and magnitude of change. In response to concerns about climate change, campaigns promoting the divestment from fossil fuels at the post-secondary level have grown steadily in recent years, not just in British Columbia, but across Canada and around the world. Such campaigns have typically been led by students. At the time of writing, there are eight active groups in British Columbia and a total of 34 nationally. The divestment movement is not without critics, though, with some suggesting that fossil-fuel divestment at schools is nothing more than a “feel good” campaign. For this discussion, you will contemplate the issue of fossil fuel divestment. Consider both the pros and cons of the issue and explain your position on fossil fuel divestment at post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. You are not expected to conduct extensive research to participate in this discussion. However, some online research is required to inform your position. _____________________________________________________________________ Module 4 Discussion Topic: Transition to a Low Carbon Society Because of the lag time associated with the climate system, we cannot stop climate change from occurring: It is already with us. Consequently, as emphasized in this course, we need effective adaptation strategies in order to cope with a change in climate. The degree to which adaptation is necessary depends on our how we choose to respond to this problem in terms of our mitigation efforts. We are in a position to mitigate, or lessen, the effects of climate change by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but given our dependence on fossil fuels, this will not be an easy task. Drawing on what you have learned throughout the course and your response to the focus questions in Topic 3, consider the following question: What is an appropriate response to the problem of climate change? In answering this question, you will need to consider what sorts of actions you think are appropriate for government, business, and individuals to take. Are government and industry, for example, doing enough to address this problem? If not, provide some examples of additional measures that you think are necessary. How important do you think economic considerations are? What sort of lifestyle changes, if any, are you prepared to make? Would you consider giving up your SUV for a hybrid car? Would you be prepared to give up your car? Do you agree with British Columbia’s revenue-neutral carbon tax?
